WOUND EVALUATION

Acute Wounds and Growing New Blood Vessels
Angiogenesis: Acute wounds have effective angiogenesis, the growth of new blood vessels. Within a few days of injury, capillary sprouts invade the wound clot to restore blood supply. Adequate angiogenesis ensures oxygen and nutrients reach the healing tissue, supporting granulation and epithelialization.

Decreased MMPs: Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are enzymes that degrade ECM components. In acute wounds, MMP activity is tightly regulated and balanced with TIMPs (tissue inhibitors of MMPs). This means MMP levels rise transiently to remove damaged tissue but then decrease as healing progresses. Controlled MMP activity allows angiogenesis and tissue formation to proceed unhindered. Acute wounds thus avoid the excessive ECM destruction that MMPs cause in chronic wounds.
